Punishment - Reflection Week 4
Thank you for sharing your idea. I agree with you. My mom used to hit me when I was a child, but it was not serious. She just wanted to correct me. Now, I and my parents share our opinion, or my parent will tell me reasons.
On Wednesday, I talked with my American friend about punishment. It seems similar to my country that parents can punish their child but not much. There are some laws to protect the child. In Thailand also have this kind of law, but we do not often use this law. In my opinion, it’s because of Thai culture that we always respect adult, especially parents, and they are right. We have to listen to them because they have more experiences than us. And I found that teachers can’t punish students or make them ashamed. Teachers can do just only tell their parents or something else but not hit or hurt student. In Thailand, I think now, The gov. try to protect students by making some law, but I havn’t heard this news often. I think teacher still hit student, but just to correct them.
My friend agrees that parents or teachers can’t hit or spank children. He said, they should only tell children what should children do. It’s enough.
I know that in America there are laws that prevent parents from abusing their children. However, I grew up with parents that had no problems spanking me for my wrong doings. They would not hit me on a regular basis and only did it when I did something serious. With that said, I think that spanking should be allowed to a certain extent. If the parent(s) has to resort to spanking their child more then a couple times a month, then there is something the parent is doing incorrectly. However, I understand why we have laws like this. There have been many incidents where parents abuse their children verbally and physically. This law is just there so if parents go too far the government can step in. As far as teachers go, I never had a teacher hit me. Most likely because they were not allowed to but I think spanking and punishment has its place just not in the public. If parents must resort to spanking their child, then it should be done as a reinforcement to a valuable lesson and not something that should be done in public.
